Oahu Day 1
I'm back-blogging our trip this week. We hardly had any internet while we were away, so I just kept a Word Document of our daily activities. The following is our first day. Please refer to Facebook to find ALL of the pictures from each day.
The first day of our trip was absolutely crazy.
Day 1: 5/18/11
After checking in at the airport, we were told we had to check one of our two carry-on bags. (We had planned to just carry it all on). Basically, my 3 hours of sleep and very busy 48 hours prior to the trip meant that I forgot NOT to pack our regular toiletries - shampoo, conditioner, etc., so the MUCH larger than 3oz. bottles held up the whole process.
In all honesty, though, they REALLY prolonged the whole thing. I don't know why each and every item had to be removed from my bag - individually - but we tried to be calm and wait it out. The security sent Robert to check the bag, (apparently, they had to escort him to wherever that was), and told me to go to the gate. I got there, and watched the plane leave – without us! Turns out there had been a change in the flight departure, and had we not been stuck in security, we'd have made it.
I got lost getting back to Robert, and people were really mean to me in the airport. Grown men would bump into me and keep walking without a glance. One knocked my backpack so hard that I went spinning around halfway. I said, "Excuse me!" He just kept walking. I wound up crying, and lost, and scared. I finally found a kind and helpful security guard who showed me how to get to where Robert was - only to learn that the airline couldn't guarantee we’d be on the next connection from San Fran to Honolulu. Basically, I was standing at the counter sobbing, and the poor woman trying to help Robert was frantically trying to figure out what the airline could do to make it better. We ended up getting a flight at 9:30am out of SEA-TAC to SFO, and they checked that one bag for free. (I really think the lady was just terrified to ask me for anything from my wallet, since I was shaking and crying).
We arrived at SFO, and waited 5 hours to find out whether we’d make it on the standby tickets for the next flight. It was a LONG 5 hours, and we had to spend a significant amount of money on food to keep me from having a hypoglycemic attack, and I was very unhappy about that. I tried to eat as little as possible, but it's necessary for me to eat a certain amount to keep everything normal in my body. Frustrating.
The airline had one seat available for standby, and they called us to the counter, Robert explained that there were two of us, and we weren't going to be separated again in an airport. They waved him away, and gave the seat to a single person. It wouldn't have upset me, except that they eventually had another person get off the plane - we were FIRST in line for those seats, and lost out because the airline messed up - again. Definitely didn't make that flight.
We spent another 4 hours figuring out where to sleep (besides the airport), and with help of family, decided to go to Napa to stay with Robert's mom's cousin, Deborah and her husband John. Big trouble figuring out how to get there on the cheap - renting a car (meaning, I would have had to drive, since Robert isn't 25 yet) would have cost us nearly $400 for just 12 hours, a cab would have been $209, and the bus fares weren't even close to reasonable. Robert’s mom & Deborah paid for our tickets on a shuttle out to the resort that John runs, and we stayed the night at their condo after a lovely dinner of chicken, green beans, and sweet potatoes, complete with a glass of red wine and some gourmet cheeses and breads. Boy, were we glad to go to sleep in what felt like a 5-star hotel! The Evans’ have everything! Since our bag was checked all the way through to Honolulu, we had zero toiletries. Thankfully, John & Deborah had everything we could have needed! We slept fabulously. We were - and are - so thankful for the provisions we had. We had resigned to sleeping in the terminal, and Deborah wouldn't hear of it. Because of she and John's hospitality, I got to see Napa, CA - the one place I've always wanted to go - and some of San Francisco.
I didn't actually take any pictures in Napa, since we were hardly there long enough to see an hour of daylight. I'll post pictures of day 2 on tomorrow's post.

A suggestion...
...on something to look at when you have a chance. :)
The Homemaker By Choice blog has been a current favorite of mine. It has been an encouragement to me, and has a lot of suggestions that are truly helpful to me.
She's currently hosting a giveaway here for the "31 Days to Clean" book. Check it out when you have a minute!

In case you're wondering...
....I am still here. :) After Kristin posted last night, I thought I should probably put something up.
I just haven't blogged about it because we have been so busy! We're leaving for Hawaii next week, and we have SO much to accomplish between now and then.
Briefly, I'll try to catch everyone up a little bit before you see the pics of my planting ambitions. (Or you can just cheat and scroll down!)
I've been nannying - a lot. The kiddos are getting more acclimated to me (the little ones), so sometimes "quiet time" and down time have been quite challenging (they do not nap). The older two are still super helpful, and although our typical routine has been shaken up, it's always nice to have some big kids to talk to and ask for help from. Although I think they miss having me all to themselves.
Robert's been working - a lot. Several weeks in a row, he's worked every shift that he's been scheduled for, called in to, and he's even been picking up shifts here and there. What a blessing to us! He's really tired, though. I'm trying so hard to have the house cleaned up and meals planned out and ready to go when he comes home from work. I feel so badly when he has to help me with stuff like that. But like I said - I've been busy, too.
Softball started last week - we lost the first two games - and we are supposed to play again tonight. It's definitely not the same as when Robert was coaching, but that's about all I'm willing to say (conflict of interests, since my hubby was the coach, and stepped down this year to be a Commissioner in the league).
Yesterday, I got to go up to the Weinberg's and spend some time with them. What a nice morning it was! It was so great for me to get out and do something different.

Anyway, here's some pictures of my plants. :) |
Admittedly, the chives haven't sprouted. I've been watering them way too much, according to my mom, whose chives are growing UPSIDE DOWN out the side of the planter box on the side of her house, left over from LAST year.
Long view of all our veggies and herbs. |
Shallot that sprouted, and I planted :) |
Cilantro start! |
I'm pretty sure this is Lemon Basil starting. I might have to transplant it soon. |
